The Lymphatic System

What Is the Lymphatic System?

massaging woman's neck The lymphatic system plays a huge role in how our bodies remove waste, and works in support of the immune system. It’s a vast network of vessels that flow throughout the body, with nodes located along the routes.

Along with your other tissues, organs and glands, the lymph vessels drain fluid, called lymph, from your body and return it to your blood. Your lymph nodes clean the fluid as it moves through, removing matter such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi. The nodes are found in clusters in your neck, armpit, groyne, chest, abdomen and pelvis.

Over time, our lymphatic system can become blocked. Through lymphatic drainage techniques, massage, and at-home practices, your body’s lymphatic network is able to effectively drain itself.

Symptoms of Underperformance and Blockages

With the large role it plays in our immunity and the removal of waste from the body, we succumb to colds, flu, and other problems more easily when our lymphatic systems are blocked or are underperforming. Patients experience a multitude of symptoms, including:

  • Low energy levels
  • Immune dysfunction
  • Weight gain
  • Bloating
  • Skin infections
  • Aching and heaviness in the body
  • Swelling and fluid retention
  • Candida overgrowth
  • Chronic Inflammation
  • Adrenal fatigue
  • Chronic sinus problems

It is possible to experience a return of previous symptoms related to the Epstein-Barr virus, herpes simplex, or varicella-zoster virus, which are typically suppressed by healthy lymphatic and immune systems.

Improving Its Performance and Efficiency

To better understand what a blocked lymphatic system looks like, imagine a tube of toothpaste that has dried near the cap. It’s almost impossible to squeeze toothpaste through the tube while the dried gunk is clogging it. Once you remove the blockage the toothpaste flows freely again.

Through lymphatic drainage, massage, adjustment techniques and even at-home care, you can improve the efficiency of your lymphatic system and enhance the work of your immune system in the process.

Drainage, Massage and At-Home Exercises

There are several ways to help your body help itself. At Family Health Professionals Helensvale, Dr Luke Hennessy (Chiropractor) uses lymphatic drainage techniques to reboot the body systems and encourage fluid to flow to its proper location once again. It removes toxins, reduces stress, and encourages your body to heal itself.

Dr Hennessy will teach you how to care for yourself with at-home massages to support your in-office care. Following at-home protocols helps patients see great results and adds consistency to the removal of toxins from the body, keeping the lymphatic system moving efficiently.

In addition to these techniques, Dr Hennessy may recommend focused massage techniques, herbs and nutritional supplements, as well as spinal traction to stimulate vertebra and back muscles.
